The Sea Air Challenge in South Mumbai
The single most important material consideration for South Mumbai furniture is salt air resistance. All homes south of Prabhadevi, and any home above the 10th floor facing west, are within the corrosive radius of the Arabian Sea. Salt air corrodes: chrome plating (visible pitting within 12–18 months), exposed untreated steel (rust within 2 years), unprotected aluminium (oxidation within 3–4 years). Specify: powder-coated steel or solid brass for hardware, stainless steel for internal connectors, powder-coated or anodised aluminium for legs. Solid teak sofa legs are the lowest-maintenance option — teak's natural oils make it naturally resistant to salt air, which is why it is used in boat building.
