Complete Sofa Care Guide for Indian Homes

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

Sofa maintenance in India requires a seasonal approach because the climate extremes — monsoon humidity (70–90% RH in coastal cities), dry-season heat, and aggressive air conditioning — each create different stress on upholstery, foam, and frames. The care calendar: Pre-monsoon (May): vacuum all crevices, apply leather conditioner, inspect for any loose joints. Monsoon (June–September): run AC or dehumidifier 2–3 hours daily near sofa; if any mould appears treat immediately with dilute white vinegar. Post-monsoon (October): condition leather again, check foam firmness, rotate loose cushions. Dry season (November–April): condition leather every 6–8 weeks in Delhi, Jaipur, and other low-humidity cities; use humidifier if your AC dries the room below 40% RH. For fabric sofas: vacuum weekly, treat spills within 2 minutes (the difference between a removable and permanent stain), and professionally clean annually.

Leather Sofa Seasonal Care

Full-grain leather needs oil replenishment because natural hide oils migrate to the surface and evaporate under heat and UV. The SOISU conditioning schedule for Indian homes: March (before summer), June (pre-monsoon), October (post-monsoon), January (mid-dry season for Delhi homes). Use a beeswax or lanolin-based conditioner — these replicate the natural oils best. Apply with a microfibre cloth, work into the hide in circular motions, leave for 15 minutes, buff off the excess. The leather should feel slightly more supple and have a low sheen — not sticky, not shiny. If the leather feels absorbent (the conditioner disappears immediately), apply a second coat after 30 minutes.

Fabric Sofa Monsoon Protocol

Fabric sofas in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai are vulnerable to mould within the foam during monsoon. Symptoms: musty smell from the sofa even when the room is clean, visible dark spots on cushion underside. Prevention: remove loose seat cushions and stand them on their edge for 2–3 hours once a week during monsoon months to allow air circulation through the foam core. If mould is inside the foam, surface-cleaning the fabric will not resolve the smell — the foam needs to be replaced. Use a fabric protector spray (scotchgard or equivalent) before monsoon — this reduces fabric moisture absorption significantly.
