Why Does Leather Furniture Crack in Mumbai?

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

Leather furniture cracks in Mumbai primarily due to rapid humidity cycling — the alternation between monsoon humidity above 85% and air-conditioned indoor air below 50% RH. This cycling causes leather fibres to swell and contract repeatedly, breaking the surface coating in bonded and corrected-grain leathers within 3–5 years. Full-grain and top-grain leather with a breathable finish resists this far better. The second common cause is direct air-conditioning airflow onto the sofa — AC units blast dry air at 16–18°C which desiccates the leather surface. Full-grain Italian leather treated with a penetrating conditioner (not just a surface coating) is the correct specification for Mumbai's climate.

The Humidity Cycling Problem

Mumbai's monsoon season pushes ambient humidity to 85–90%. In the same apartment, an air conditioner running at 22°C brings relative humidity down to 45–55%. Leather — like wood — expands with humidity and contracts with dryness. A sofa near an AC unit experiences this cycle multiple times per day. Cheap bonded leather (leather fibre dust + polyurethane binder) has no tolerance for this cycling. The PU binder delaminates from the backing fabric, causing peeling within 18–24 months. Full-grain leather, which has intact hide fibres, can absorb and release moisture without structural failure if properly conditioned.

Bonded Leather vs Full-Grain Leather

Bonded leather is not leather — it is a composite material made from leather dust, fabric backing, and a polyurethane surface coating. It looks like leather, feels like leather initially, and is priced like leather by unscrupulous retailers. It has no tolerance for Mumbai conditions. Full-grain leather is the top layer of cowhide with the natural grain intact. It is the most breathable, the strongest, and the only grade that develops a patina with age. Top-grain leather (buffed to remove surface imperfections, then coated) is the second-best option and is more consistent in finish. Any retailer selling "Italian leather" without specifying full-grain or top-grain is selling you bonded or split leather.

Correct Maintenance for Mumbai

Full-grain leather in Mumbai should be cleaned with a damp (not wet) cloth and conditioned with a leather cream every 4–6 months. Never use silicone-based polishes — they block the leather's pores and accelerate cracking long-term. Keep the sofa at least 60 cm from any direct AC airflow. Annual professional leather conditioning extends leather life significantly. SOISU's leather products are supplied with a maintenance kit and cleaning guide specific to Indian humidity conditions.
