The Complete Furniture Checklist for a New Flat in India — Room by Room

What furniture do I actually need? The question every new homeowner in India asks — usually while standing in an empty flat, feeling overwhelmed.

By Rohan Shah

Getting possession of a new flat is one thing. Turning it into a home is another. The furniture decisions you make in the first six months tend to stick — most people live with their original purchases for five to ten years. That makes this the most important shopping you'll do in a decade.

The priority order

  • Living room — sofa, coffee table, TV unit, one accent chair.
  • Master bedroom — bed, two side tables, wardrobe, study chair if WFH.
  • Dining — table, six chairs, sideboard if space allows.
  • Guest / kids — bed, study desk, one storage piece.
  • Foyer — console, mirror, shoe rack.
