How to Care for a Leather Sofa in India — Year-Round Guide

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

Leather sofa care in India requires a year-round discipline because India's climate swings between extremes that affect leather in different ways: monsoon humidity causes mould and surface staining; dry-season heat causes desiccation and cracking; urban dust accumulates rapidly in Indian air. The care system is simple: clean regularly, condition seasonally, protect proactively. Clean weekly with a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Spot-clean spills within 5 minutes — use a damp (not wet) cloth and blot, never rub. Deep-clean monthly with pH-neutral leather cleaner. Condition leather four times a year aligned to Indian seasons: May (before peak summer), June (before monsoon), October (post-monsoon), January (mid-dry season). Use a conditioner with beeswax or lanolin base — these most closely replicate the natural oils in the hide. Apply, leave 15 minutes, buff with a clean cloth. The leather should feel supple and have a low natural sheen, not slick or sticky.

Products to Use and Avoid in India

Use: pH-neutral leather cleaner (pH 5–7), lanolin or beeswax conditioner, clean soft microfibre cloths. Do not use: baby wipes (contain alcohol and surfactants that strip protective finish), furniture polish with silicone (builds up as a sticky film), household spray cleaners (too alkaline), saddle soap (too alkaline for finished leather), coconut oil (clogs leather pores, promotes mould), olive oil (goes rancid in Indian heat). Many Indian cleaning product brands recommend "oil" applications for leather — this advice is appropriate for unfinished leather and saddles but damages the protective finish on modern furniture leather.

Treating Common Indian Leather Damage

Chai stain: blot immediately, do not rub. Apply a small amount of leather cleaner with a soft cloth in circular motion. Allow to dry naturally. If stain remains after drying, a professional leather repair service can apply a colour-matched touch-up. Turmeric (haldi) stain: the most damaging common Indian stain on leather. Act within 2 minutes — turmeric's curcumin binds to the leather surface quickly. Blot with a dry cloth, then apply a paste of baking soda and water, leave 5 minutes, wipe off. Follow with leather cleaner. Even with prompt treatment, some turmeric staining on light leather may require professional repair. Mould: wipe with 50/50 white vinegar and distilled water solution on a damp cloth. Allow to dry completely (minimum 4 hours). Follow with conditioner. Repeat if mould returns.
