How to Clean a Leather Sofa in India?

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

Leather sofas in India require conditioning more than cleaning — the real threat is not dirt but the humidity cycling between monsoon dampness (85% RH) and air-conditioned dryness (below 50% RH) that cracks leather without regular treatment. Weekly: wipe with a dry or lightly damp microfibre cloth. Monthly: apply a pH-neutral leather cleaner followed by a leather conditioner. Every six months: treat the entire sofa with a leather protection cream that seals the surface against moisture penetration. Avoid baby wipes, alcohol wipes, and all-purpose cleaners — these strip the protective coating from full-grain leather within months. For stains: ink responds to a specialist leather ink remover; oil absorbs with cornflour applied dry. Top-grain and full-grain leather can be reconditioned professionally if the surface has dulled; bonded leather cannot be restored once it begins peeling.

The India-Specific Problem: Humidity Cycling

No European leather care guide addresses India's climate challenge. In Mumbai, leather expands in monsoon as it absorbs ambient humidity, then contracts when you turn on the AC — a cycle repeated hundreds of times per year. Each expansion-contraction cycle stresses the leather's surface coating. Full-grain leather with a breathable aniline finish handles this well; corrected-grain and bonded leather cracks within 3–5 years under this cycling.

Monthly Care Routine

Step 1: Wipe down the entire sofa with a lightly damp microfibre cloth (distilled water, not tap water — the minerals in hard tap water can leave deposits on leather). Step 2: Apply a small amount of pH-neutral leather cleaner to a clean cloth and work in circular motions. Do not spray directly onto the leather. Step 3: Buff dry with a clean cloth. Step 4: Apply leather conditioner using a circular motion. Allow to absorb for 10 minutes, then buff off any excess. This routine takes 15 minutes and extends the life of a leather sofa by 5–10 years.

What to Avoid

Never use: baby wipes (contain alcohol and fragrance that strip leather's pH balance), household all-purpose sprays, saddle soap (too alkaline for modern finished leather), olive or coconut oil (attracts mould in Indian humidity), hair dryers or direct heat to dry wet leather. Always test any product on an inconspicuous area — the back of a cushion or under the seat base — before applying to visible surfaces.
