When Should You Replace a Sofa in India?

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

A quality sofa in India should last 10–15 years with proper care; a budget sofa typically lasts 3–5 years. The clearest sign to replace is permanent foam compression: when the seat cushion no longer returns to its original height after you stand up, the foam has failed. Other definitive signs: visible sagging in the seat base (spring failure), frame wobble or creak under normal body weight (joint failure), persistent odour after cleaning (mould inside foam/batting), or fabric/leather that has separated, peeled, or torn beyond aesthetic repair. Repair is often worth it for structural pieces — refoaming a quality sofa costs ₹3,000–8,000 per cushion and extends its life by 5+ years. Bonded leather cannot be repaired; once peeling starts, replacement is the only option. Replacing a sofa annually is a sign the original purchase was in the wrong quality tier.

Foam Failure — The #1 Reason to Replace

Foam failure is the primary reason Indian homeowners replace sofas. When the central seat area becomes concave — you can see the depression when the sofa is unoccupied — the foam has permanently lost its cell structure. This happens faster in sofas with density below 32 kg/m³ and accelerates in humid climates. The test: press down firmly on the seat cushion and release. A good foam returns to original height within 2–3 seconds. A failed foam stays compressed or rises slowly over 5–10 seconds.

Frame and Spring Failure

A creaking or wobbling frame is not just annoying — it indicates structural failure at the joint level. Indian-made sofas using staple-and-glue construction typically begin joint failure within 5–7 years under daily use. European-constructed sofas using mortise-and-tenon or dowel-and-screw joints last 15–25 years. If the sofa wobbles when you sit in the corner (not the centre), the corner joint has failed. This is repairable by a carpenter but recurs in poor-quality frames.

Repair vs Replace: The Decision Matrix

Repair is worth it when: the frame is solid and only foam/upholstery needs replacement, the sofa is of genuine quality (Italian or quality Indian brand), and the repair cost is under 30% of replacement cost. Replace when: bonded leather is peeling, the frame has multiple joint failures, persistent mould smell remains after professional cleaning, or the sofa was purchased below ₹30,000 and has reached year 3–4 of use. Quality sofas from SOISU, Natuzzi, or similar brands are always worth refoaming.
